‘Escobar?’, I asked in bewilderment, thinking how oddly brilliant it would be to name your own restaurant after an infamous Latin American drug lord. My witty partner in crime, Ifigeneia, argued that it should be a crime to serve such luscious meals in a setting Design Father would have loved, hence the name.
Twenty minutes after leaving from our apartment in Sint-Jansplein, we and our entourage of three food gangsters arrived at Escobar. We headed into the restaurant and were sat at a large wooden table that could easily cater for 5-6 people. Looking around, this was clearly not the place to just shovel breakfast down your throat and go. It was a brunch place where people were taking the time to appreciate their food and time spent with loved ones.
And now it’s time to check out the food:
The Frog King is the Escobar version of the Maneki Neko, the gold-colored waving cat.
Savvas, the mafia man was in for trouble!!
Who doesn’t just love cheese dripping out of their sandwich? Pancakes with fruits and moist chocolate cake to round off what was the epitome of brunch!
On another note, it was pretty cool to see a small pocket of Latin America in the midst of Antwerp’s diamond district. One of my first observations at Escobar was that the restaurant had two facades allowing for natural light to enter, which on that specific rainy day was much appreciated.
After our copious brunch, we started roaming around the streets of Antwerp and make the most of the city Urban Hypsteria has repeatedly proved it loves to bits:
